    Factors Influencing Solid Waste Management in Luwafu Parish- Makindye Division, Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA).

    The study assessed the factors influencing solid waste management within urban areas, a case study of Luwafu parish-Makindye division, KCCA. The general objective was to investigate factors influencing solid waste management in Luwafu parish-Makindye division, Kampala while the specific objectives were; 1.To assess socio-economic factors influencing solid waste management in Luwafu parish- Makindye division, Kampala Capital City Authority. 2.To establish the types of solid waste generated in Luwafu parish-Makindye division, Kampala Capital City Authority. 3.To assess the methods of solid waste management at household level in Luwafu parish- Makindye division, Kampala Capital City Authority. A community based cross-sectional study design was conducted in a randomly selected 363 residents of Luwafu parish. A structured and pre-tested questionnaire was used to collect data. Trained research assistants were involved in the study. Data from completed questionnaires were cleaned, captured, coded and entered into the computer using SPSS software version 16.0. The study found out that that education, occupational status and sorting of waste according to type are related to solid waste management. The study recommended that residents should be enlightened in the way the public containers are to be used. Environmental education should stress on the set of people that can use the container instead of young and adolescent. The government should vote sizeable amount of money for refuse management in the city. The amount will cover education of the people, training, workshop, maintenance of vehicle and purchasing additional one to complement the existing stock.
