Prevalence and Factors Associated with Extra-marital Relationship in Mubende Municipal Council, Mubende District.

Abstract

Introduction The study was carried out to investigate the factors associated with extramarital relationship in Mubende Municipal Council, Mubende District. The study objectives were: To establish the individual factors associated with extramarital relationship, to establish the client’s social economic factors associated with extramarital relationship and to establish the client’s environmental factors associated with extramarital relationships.

Methodology A cross –sectional research design was employed and it involved collection of quantitative data. In order to achieve the set objectives, 110 respondents in Mubende Municipal Council were engaged in the study. Data was collected by use of a self administered questionnaire and later computed and analyzed using SPSS.

Findings The study investigated factors associated with extramarital relationships in Mubende Municipal council, Mubende District and the findings revealed individual factors such as: marital status and religion had significant evidence of association (p<0.05) with extramarital relationship; other individual factors such as age, gender, education level and tribe that had no significant evidence of association (p>0.05) with extramarital relationships. Social economic factors such as: education, religion and peer pressure had no significant evidence of association (p>0.05) with extramarital relationship. Environmental factors too had no significant evidence of association with extramarital relationship.

Recommendations The study shows the need for further research on factors associated with extramarital relationship. The recommendations include; designing and enforcing enlightenment programmes geared towards addressing the consequences of extramarital sex among citizens so that they could learn and adjust extensively to sexual obligations and challenges that are attached to marriage, Forums, workshops, and seminars should be organized to educate men and women on the effects of extramarital affair in their marriage and there is need to research on a wide range of factors whether individual, social economic or environmental factors associated with extramarital relationships.
